What some of John’s pupils have to say...
“Thank you so much for the summer school at Ally Pally last week. Ethan had a really inspirational time. He thoroughly enjoyed himself and came away each day really happy with what he was achieving. He felt challenged but knew that he was improving and was very excited by the progress he made. He found the off ice exercises very challenging but surprised himself by how much fitter he felt by doing them. It has given his ice skating confidence a real boost.”

“John began coaching me JUST to help me with my jumps. I was training with him for two hours a week and was the part of the week I looked forward to the most. Not only did John help with my jumps, but also improved my life by boosting my social confidence through his teaching and body language.
John’s coaching style is like none I have seen before - he is so lively and has an energy about him that makes you want to skate better for him (as well as for yourself!) which is great motivation for any skater.
I am now aiming to skate in the 2012 European Championships in Sheffeild and then the 2014/2018 winter games and shows. However, I still look forward to my trips home to London to see, skate and have good time on the ice with John.”

“John began coaching me in February 2011, when I could only just skate. He has always been very cheerful, enthusiastic, funny and encouraging during lessons. I think he is a great teacher as he always demonstrates new ice skating elements and explains very thoroughly what he wants you to do. He also shows you what you’re doing if you’re doing something wrong which I have found a great help in getting things right.

I have improved a lot since I started lessons with John and I entered my first competition in July. It was a jump, spin and spiral club competition at Alexandra Palace. On the day of the competition, I was a little nervous but John was very supportive so I felt reassured. My programme went well and I achieved first place which I was really happy about.

During the summer, I spent a week on John’s summer school. It was really fun and also very challenging. I learned many new jumps, spins and skating exercises during the short period of time and felt I improved greatly. The off-ice training with John’s wife Rinata was very hard and tiring but I felt a lot fitter by the end of the week.

I would thoroughly recommend John as an ice skating coach to anyone - his lessons are great fun, while also learning lots.“

“John is inspirational because he is such a great skater and he's always energetic and ready to help. At his summer skating school, we did some really challenging steps, jumps and spins which were hard at first but I could see myself improving. My half an hour lesson with John is the highlight of my week and I am looking forward to trying my first routine with music. John is very friendly and I would recommend him to anyone who wants to learn to skate.”

“John is a great ice skater and he is inspirational to my daughter Layla (age 8).  She looks up to him and he shares his experience with her.  He is patient and a caring instructor.  I would not hesitate to recommend John to anybody starting out or looking to improve their existing technique. When Layla speaks to others about John she describes him as 'awesome' and fun, and always looks forward to her lesson.”

"I started training with John at the beginning of February with no concept of skating whatsoever: think Bambi on ice. After only half an hour, I was moving freely around the rink under my own steam. Eight months on, I’m now skating at speed with confidence, while swiftly working through the various skating elements, adding to my ever-expanding skill set - and I'm throughly enjoying it. John's easy-going nature combined with his unique, structured teaching method makes for the perfect coach. In short, he's nothing short of a miracle worker who I'd recommend to any skater of any ability."

"I started lessons with John having only ever been on an ice rink twice in my life, too nervous to even let go of the side. Since starting to learn with John, I have now escalated from complete novice to taking my level 6 exam within 9 months.  John’s encouraging and calming approach helped me to develop quickly and reliably without over-stretching myself – he responds to my feedback and if some technique doesn’t feel right, he will help to adjust it until it does, which aids in building confidence on the ice (definitely the most important thing when learning). Above all though, John makes skating an exciting, educational and fun experience!"

“I had been ice skating a few times before I started skating with John but could only skate forwards and stopping was only executed by crashing into the barrier. By the end of my first lesson, John had me skating forwards, backwards and I could stop. I immediately wanted to have more lessons and now my weekly lesson is the highlight of my week. John's infectious enthusiasm makes me want to skate more often and also to keep practicing everything he has taught me. His patience and humour makes learning to skate fun and he continues to push me out of my comfort zone with every lesson so that I continue to progress. I'd recommend John to anyone wanting to learn to skate or simply wanting to improve their skills.”

“John began coaching me in October 2011. Immediately, he put me at ease with his friendly, calm and encouraging manner, which included a great sense of humour. John has reignited my love of ice-skating and has helped immensely with my skating technique, self-belief and confidence. I’m currently competing at Junior Level with the aim to qualify for the British Championships this year and I feel with John behind me I have the best chance I could have.

John is an inspirational, unique coach who has taught me a great deal and confirmed to me that this is the career I want to pursue in the future.”
